The paddle (桨) cuts through the water asParalympian athlete Curtis McGrath pushes his canoe (皮划艇) forward. With each strongmove, a quick flash of green-and-yellow Aboriginal art can be seen on thepaddle — the special design for Australia’s Paralympic team. For McGrath, thispattern, called “The Journey”, carries deep meaning. It matches his own story,as he found strength in sports after losing his legs. It seems symbolic of theidea that talking can support recovering.
Many people find itdifficult to talk about serious illness or injury. Serious injuries, likeMcGrath’s, come with a complex range of emotions including anger, denial, anddepression. But sharing such emotions and talking about injuries can helppeople to manage them.
“For me, to have a goodsupport network around me helped me get through those tough times,” McGrathsaid during an interview in 2018. Understandably, many people with seriousinjuries find it easier to talk with others going through the same or a similarexperience. This can bring a fuller level of understanding that helps peoplelive with their injury on practical and emotional levels.
“Six months after I gothurt, I got to see people who’d been injured doing things that I didn’t thinkwere possible,” says McGrath. Inspired, he tried a few sports before findinghis passion for paracanoe that he took to the Invictus Games in London, 2014.His achievements in sports have seen him win multiple gold medals at theParalympic Games and World Championships.
McGrath has become achampion for people with a disability, and a motivational speaker. And he’s notafraid to openly discuss his suffering. “It’s important to remember that thehard times never last forever,” advises McGrath, “There’s someone out there that’sgoing through something similar. It’s your responsibility to reach out to talkand to see what you could be.”
24. Why does the author mention “The Journey” on McGrath’s paddle?
A. To present his personal recovery story.B. To express his honor as a disabled athlete.
C. To explain the special design for the team.D. To highlight the importance of teamspirit.
25. How can sharing emotions about serious injuries benefitpeople?
A. It reduces their dependence on others.B. It saves them the cost of medical care.
C. It increases their tolerance of injuries.D. It helps them getprofessional guidance.
26. What does McGrath advise disabled people to do?
A. Contain emotions.B.Take responsibility.
C. Develop hobbies.D.Seek connection.
27. Which of the following can best describe McGrath?
A. Curious and devoted.B.Strict and influential.
C. Strong and independent.D.Open-hearted and inspiring.

In an oasis of green space sandwiched among Manhattan skyscrapers, one oddball stood out among the parkgoers Monday morning. It was a robot mower(割草机) named “Belawncé”.Looking like an oversize Roomba with heavy-duty wheels, it pilots itself withthe help of an artificial intelligence camera system that resembles a pair ofhuman eyes. After two to four hours of mowing, the robot navigates to a chargingstation. For the past few months, the electric robot mower has taken overgrass-clipping duties on the main lawn of Bryant Park, a small but heavily usedpublic park. Toshi Yano, director of the park, said in an interview that therobot mower has proved effective, safe and more environmentally friendly thangas-powered, human-operated mowers.Belawncé is a glimpse at the promise and the problems of usingrobots for tasks such as yard work. Bryant Park previously tried a couple ofother robot mowers that werefinicky. The prior robots would get stuckin certain parts of the park. To connect to satellites for navigation, at timesthe park needed one receiver on-site and another on a nearby office tower.Starting this spring, Bryant Park picked a model made by a company calledSunseeker. It has required less human intervention over time.Unlike its pop star namesake, Belawncé and its fellow robot mowersaren’t beloved by all. Nanci Fioravanti, landscape manager for Green-Wood, apopular green space in Brooklyn that uses two robot mowers, has had to reassurestaff worried about job losses from automation. Fioravanti also said that therobot mowers aren’t suited to steep areas of Green-Wood or where tree covermakes them lose signal.Park officials made sure Belawncé navigated around or stopped forhumans and wildlife. “Either the birds or the AI or some combination of bothare doing what they’re supposed to do and avoiding one another,” Yano said.28. What is a key feature of Belawncé?
A. It is gas-powered.B.It looks human-like.
C. It is uniquely shaped.D.It operates autonomously.
29. What does the underlined word “finicky” in paragraph 3probably mean?
A. Efficient.B.Demanding.C. Independent.D.Conventional.
30. What aspect concerning robot mowers was mentioned in paragraph4?
A. Their adaptability.B.Their limitations.
C. Their environmental value.D.Their maintenance costs.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the use of robot mowers.B. To call for a review of robot mowers.
C. To report on the adoption of a robot mower.D. To present the development of a robotmower.

While coral reefs coveronly a tiny fraction of the ocean floor, they are home to millions of plantsand animals, representing tens of thousands of species.
Researchers estimate thatnearly 60 percent of the world’s coral reefs are seriously threatened. Coralsdepend on clean, clear, relatively shallow waters to survive. When stressed, they can lose their co-existing zooxanthelle (虫黄藻) — a process called “bleaching”, which means the coral’s color isremoved. Without its food source, the coral often dies. Along pollutedcoastlines or on reefs where plant-eating fish have been severely reduced byfishing, the coral reefs are quickly overrun with seaweed.
The climate events of 1997— 1998, such as flooding, mudslides and destructive storms, struck a major blowto the world’s coral. “Global ocean and land temperatures averaged about fourdegrees Fahrenheit above normal, and sea level rose at least one inch aboveaverage,” said Dr. William Patzert, JPL oceanographer. “We saw areas where fortens or hundreds of kilometers, there was 90 percent death. Total global coraldeath rate may have been as high as 20 percent.”
This became thebest-documented global coral bleaching event in history. “For the first time,”said Patzert, “scientists were watching all the tropical oceans and seas fromspace, while an army of researchers and citizen scuba divers recorded theunderwater devastation — the locations and intensity of coral bleaching. Thesedata will provide an advance in our understanding of coral reefs.”
Using satellite data onsea-surface temperatures, scientists are developing maps of “hot spots”, placeswhere unusually warm sea-surface temperatures may be stressing corals. Thesemay provide an early warning of coral reefs in distress and, possibly, anotherworldwide coral bleaching event. Remote sensing from satellites and aircraft isproviding new ways to survey and monitor coral reefs. “We know that climateevents and the heat changes around the tropics have huge impacts on corals,”said Patzert. “While we can’t change these natural events, the more we knowabout them and how they affect corals, the more we can do to help coral reefssurvive.”
32. What can we learn about the coral reefs?
A. They contribute to underwater diversity.B. They recover quickly after being bleached.
C. They cover a large area of the ocean floor.D. They are threatened only by humanactivities.
33. What is the root cause of coral bleaching between 1997 and1998?
A. The loss of zooxanthelle.B.The rise of the sea level.
C. The overgrowth of seaweed.D.The outbreak of climate events.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward using satellite data inthe research?
A. Critical.B.Indifferent.C. Supportive.D.Negative.
35. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Coral Reefs: Home to Marine Biodiversity
B. Coral Bleaching: Causes and Monitoring Efforts
C. Satellite Technology: A Solution to coral Decline
D. Coral Reefs: Climate Threats and Protective Measures

In Benton School, thechatter of students filled Room 13 every day. Among the lively atmosphere,Wanda Petronski, a poor Polish girl, with her unruly hair and a faded bluedress that showed signs of frequent wear, became the target of cruel jokesamong her classmates.
Each morning, as Wandastepped into the classroom, a sudden silence would fall over the room. Theabrupt silence was soon replaced by whispers and laughter. “Look, there’sWanda,” Peggy would whisper to her friend Maggie, her eyes shining withmischief. Peggy, the most popular girl in class, was well-known for her sharptongue and a good sense of fashion. Driven by a mix of boredom and meanness (恶意), she would call out, “Howmany dresses do you have now, Wanda?” Her voice was filled with pretendedcuriosity.
Wanda would hesitate, herfingers nervously twisting her dress. “A hundred,” she would reply in a softmurmur; her voice was barely heard. Instantly, the classroom would erupt inlaughter. “A hundred!” Peggy would shout, her laughter echoing through the room.“I bet they’re all made of paper!” The other students would join in, theircruel laughter filling the air. Wanda’s face would redden with awkward, and shewould quickly lower her head, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
Miss Mason, their teacher, often tried to intervene. “That’s enough, class. Let’s start the lesson,” shewould say firmly, attempting to restore order. But the damage had been done.Day after day, Peggy and her group of friends continued to make fun of Wanda, asking about her “hundred dresses” and making ill remarks about her plainclothes.

A few days later, MissMason announced the result and everyone was shocked. Wanda won the first prize, for she had submitted 100 exquisite, uniquely detailed fashion design drawings. Each drawing was a masterpiece, featuring elaborate patterns and vivid colorsthat far exceeded the simple sketches of the other students. Peggy and theclass stared in disbelief at the beautiful display of Wanda’s talent. But Wandawasn’t there to see her triumph. She had been absent for days, likely due toclassmates’ constant bad behavior. The classroom was filled with an awkwardsilence as the students realized how wrong they had been to laugh at her.Feeling a strong sense ofguilt, Peggy and Maggie went to Wanda’s house with the good news. When theyarrived, Wanda seemed surprised to see them. Peggy, her voice filled withregret, said, “Wanda, your drawings won! They’re amazing. We’re so sorry for beingmean.” Maggie nodded in agreement. Wanda smiled gently and said, “It’s okay.”She then offered to give Peggy and Maggie some of her drawings. “I want you tohave them,” she said. Her kindness touched their hearts. From that day on,Peggy and Maggie learned the importance of kindness and never judged others bytheir appearance again. Whenever anyone walked through the school hall and sawWanda’s beautiful drawings, they were reminded of the power of forgiveness andthe impact that a single act of kindness could have.
