Growing up near a park that is home to 25 species of birds meant that wildlife was

always a big part of McCubbin's life.

She says that when she was younger her bedroom was like a mini zoo, filled with snakes,

tarantulas, and praying mantises The tarantulas were particularly useful

whenever she didn't want her mom to come into her room. When she wasn't

studying the wildlife in her bedroom,McCubbin was exploring nature outside.

McCubbin has dyslexia(阅读障碍症,), which can make reading and spelling

difficult. This made some lessons at school quite challenging for her because she

couldn't learn in the same way as the other pupils in her class. McCubbin had to

find her own way to absorb the information and understand science. She believes

her dyslexia helps with TV presenting today because she tries to speak about

science in a way that she would have understood when she was younger

Throughout her career, McCubbin has worked with many different animals.

Some of her favorites, she says, are those with a bad reputation. When she was 18

years old, she volunteered at a shark research center.“I just fell in love with sharks

from the first moment I got in the water with them.” There are around 40 different

species of shark around the UK's coastline throughout the year, and McCubbin

thinks that people misjudge them. Although sharks have big teeth, they can be very

gentle, McCubbin says. They’re some of the most curious, charming animals

around”

An important part of McCubbin's job is raising awareness about wildlife and

the environment. She's presented a number of TV shows, and viewers were

encouraged to share footage of wildlife from their gardens or local areas.

McCubbin loves that you can always have unexpected encounters with wildlife.

She says,“You can go to the same place 100 times, and you' ll always experience

something different.”

24. What can we learn about McCubbin's life as a young girl?

A. She spent time studying 25 species of birds in her room.

B. She found animals with big teeth more charming than others.

C. She used pets to keep her mother out of her bedroom.

D. She preferred exploring nature-outside to reading schoolbooks.

25. What does McCubbin think of her dyslexia?

A It turned out to benefit her later profession.

B. It caused her to struggle with science experiments

C. It was the reason why she explored nature outside school.

D. It prevented her from acquiring scientific knowledge.

26. McCubbin is fond of animals with a“badreputation” mainly to .

A. challenge her own limits of courage

B speak up for those unfairly perceived

C. promote her early volunteering experience

D. check the number of shark species in the UK

27. Which of the following best describes McCubbin's work as a TV presenter?

A. Presenting science in a way she once struggled to absorb.

B. Encouraging viewers to share wildlife footage from gardens.

C. Traveling to the same UK coastline to find curious animals.

D Raising public awareness about the environment and wildlife.

C

You can almost see scientists rubbing their hands or groaning whenever a new

Hollywood film rolls out, riddled with scientific errors.(But one astronomer voiced a

suggestion——maybe-it's OK if a movie makes mistakes in the facts, as long as it gets

the big picture right about science and scientists.

Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute comes with his own experience on Hollywood

sets. His biggest problem wasn't with the alien technology. Instead, he fought for the

filmmakers to stop showing the scientists as data-calculating stereotypes(刻板印象).

“Real scientists don't describe an object entering the solar system as‘notable for the

fact that it was not moving in an asteroidal ellipse… but moving at nearly three times

ten-to the seventh meters per second,’“saidShostak.“More likely, they would say that

there was ‘a rock headed our way ’”“Besides trying to make his fictional versions

more recognizably human, he emphasized the need for films to focus on conveying the

scientific method rather than arguing about details.

Another scientist disagreed, saying that inaccurate science could have

consequences beyond fictional settings. Wayne Grody, a physician at UCLA,

suggested that wrong depictions(描绘,刻画 ) of medicine could confuse viewers.

“Perhaps some people do take away more science than they should from their favorite

films or television shows, although I'd like to see the court ease where someone

successfully- charges Grey's Anatomy with misleading them on a medical condition.”

However, Shostak's point seems valid on the whole. Even medical educators have

used shows to engage medical students to deal with bioethical issues. The power of big

or small screen drama comes from persuasive characters that may represent brilliant

doctors or scientific geniuses, but also have human quirks that allow viewers to

empathize. Such stories serve the purpose of helping demystify science. After all,

science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once remarked that science could become as

mysterious and impossible to understand as magic. Storytellers may help shine a light

into the foggy temple by creating relatable characters that practice science.

28. What is Seth Shostak's main concern?

A. The accuracy of alien technology depiction.

B. The use of technical terms in scientific dialogue.

C. The emphasis on conveying the scientific method.

D. The close-minded description of scientists.

29. What does Wayne Grody imply by mentioning the potential case against Grev's Anatomy?

A. Fictional medical errors can result in serious real-world confusion.

B. Television dramas are responsible for educating medical students

C. Viewers have become more critical of scientific details in shows.

D. Courts should play a role in monitoring scientific content in media.

30. What does the underlined word “quirks” in the last paragraph probably mean?

A. Talents. B. Ambitions.

C. Characteristics. D. Weakenesses.

31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Seth Shostak: A Scientific Consultant in Hollywood

B Scientific Accuracy in Films: Does It Really matter?

C. The Hidden Dangers of Misleading Medical Dramas

D Why Do Scientists Struggle with Stereotypes in Movies?

D

AI image generators have made a giant leap forward in a remarkably short period. These

sophisticated systems are now capable of creating human faces that are not only convincing

but often perceived as more realistic than actual human ones. This phenomenon, termed

“hyper-realism”, poses a significant challenge to digital trust. However, a recent collaborative

study by researchers from the UK points to a promising path: improving our collective

AI-face detection capabilities through specialized, targeted training.

The research team tested the face-assessing skills of 664 volunteers, categorized into two

distinct groups:“super-recognizers”—— individuals who possess a rare, naturally superior

ability for facial recognition—— and those with typical recognition skills. The experiment

involved two core tasks designed to test intuition and logic. In the initial task, volunteers

evaluated a single image to determine its origin; in the subsequent task, they were presented

with a pair of faces—— one real and one synthetic—— and asked to identify the fake.

In the control group that received no prior instruction, the data revealed a worrying trend.

Super-recognizers correctly identified AI faces only 41 percent of the time, while typical

recognizers dropped to a mere 31 percent. Given that half the images were AI-generated, both

groups performed significantly worse than random chance(50 percent). This statistical gap

confirms that AI portraits can effectively deceive the human brain's natural processing

systems.

To counter this, the study introduced a brief five-minute intervention.

Participants were trained to look for “tell-tale”signs—— subtle biological flaws

such as unnatural teeth alignment or strange blurring where the hair meets the

skin.

Following this session, the accuracy of super- recognizers boosted to 64

percent. In contrast, while typical recognizers improved to 51 percent, they

remained at the level of a coin flip.

“As AI images are increasingly exploited for illegal purposes like identity-

theft scams, testing detection methods is crucial from a security standpoint,”

explains researcher EilidhNoyes. The findings highlight that while technology

evolves, human expertise remains indispensable. Combining innate talent with-

professional training may be our best defense in verifying digital identities and

securing the future of online interaction.

32. The study mainly examines participants’ .

A. logical reasoning

B. reaction speed

C. technical knowledge

D. observational skills

33. What does the training session primarily focus on?

 A. Improving the general speed of visual assessment.

 B. Analyzing the psychological impact of digital fakes.

 C. Recognizing artificial traces in biological features.

 D. Understanding the technical principles of AI systems.

34. What is the significance of the 64 percent accuracy rate mentioned in

paragraph 5?

A. It confirms the potential of combining gift with practice.

 B. It represents the maximum limit of human- recognition,

 C. It shows the similarity between human and AI.

D. It indicates that most people can be trained to spot false images.

35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A Technical evolution will eventually eliminate identity theft

B. Professional training is more essential than natural talent.

C. Human factors remain a critical layer in digital defense.

D. The security risks of AI are currently overestimated.

During the journey of achieving success, everyone often encounters obstacles

that test their determination. Adversity is an unavoidable part of life, but the ability

to manage it sets individuals apart. This ability is often referred to as Adversity

Quotient(AQ). 36 White IQ and EQ focus on cognitive and emotional abilities,

AQ focuses on one's capacity to bounce back from failure. Fortunately, researchers

suggest that your AQ is not fixed and can be strengthened through several key

strategies.

Cultivate a growth mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that your abilities can be developed through

dedication and hard work. Instead of seeing challenges as unbeatable barriers, you

should view them as chances to improve. . By focusing on learning and

perseverance, individuals can significantly enhance their Adversity Quotient. This

shift in thinking allows people to see themselves as active participants in their

growth rather than passive victims.

38

Having a strong support network is crucial in times of adversity. Surrounding

yourself with positive individuals can provide encouragement and guidance.

Sharing experiences and looking for support from others who have faced similar

challenges can help in building resilience and enhancing your adaptability.

Knowing you are not alone often provides the extra strength needed to keep

moving forward.

Learn from every setback

Every failure presents an opportunity for learning and growth. 39 Reflecting

on past experiences and identifying areas for improvement can contribute to the

development of your resilience. This habit prevents individuals from being frozen

by the fear of making mistakes again.

40 . With the right mindset, strong external support, and a habit of reflecting

on setbacks, anyone can navigate life's storms and emerge stronger than before.

Resilience, after all, is not about never falling, but about how quickly you get back

up.

A. Lean on a reliable community B.Expand your social connection

C. Focusing on the negative side of a crisis is a natural tendency

D. This internal perspective acts as a guide through hardship

E. High AQ individuals actively draw lessons from their failures

F. It serves as a practical tool to evaluate one's future potential G. Embracing these shifts in attitude will lead to lasting growth:

At twenty-four, I moved tow America, a massive 11, 000 kilometers away from my

homeland. The initial excitement of a new start soon faded, replaced by the harsh reality

of fitting into an unfamiliar environment. Since I worked from home, my world was

reduced to the four walls of my small apartment and a glowing laptop screen. I spent my

days in video meetings where people spoke a language that was still a bit too fast for me

to fully grasp. When the screens went dark, the silence of the rooms seemed to echo my

own growing sense of displacement. I was physically in a new country, but mentally, I

was still searching for a place to land.

Desperate to break this suffocating(令人窒息的) isolation, I signed up as a volunteer

at a local animal shelter. My supervisor, a kind woman named Sarah, introduced me to the

residents. In the farthest corner of the cat section, she stopped before a small cage. “This

is Luna,” she whispered. “She was found abandoned in a rainy alley. She's terrified of

everything.”

Luna was a small, grey-and-white cat with large, lonely green eyes. Whenever I

approached, she would cover(畏缩) in the corner, her tiny body shaking at the slightest

sound. Sarah told me that my only task was to help Luna feel safe again. For the first

two weeks, I sat outside her cage for hours every day. I brought my laptop and worked

there, or I would speak to her softly about the home I missed, describing the busy

streets and the scent of my mother's cooking. I wanted to comfort her, but the invisible

wall between us remained.

One stormy afternoon, a sudden crash of thunder shook the shelter's roof. The

lights flickered, and the animals began to cry out in fear. I looked at Luna, who

trembled more than ever, her breath coming in quick, tiny gasps(喘气) as she tried to

hide behind a small wooden box in her cage.

注意:

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

I opened the cage door and sat quietly beside her.

Luna's progress soon began to change me as well.

该部分明确指出“Do not use this product if you haveever had a bad react

ion to paracetamol or any other ingredients used in these tablets, such as milk products, povidone, orsugar.(如果你曾对扑热息

首先定位至“DosageandDirections(剂量与用法)”部分,找到对应年龄段“Children(6to11year

通览全文,其格式高度标准化,包含“DrugFacts(药品事实)”、“Indications(Uses)(用途)”、“Warni

ngs and Precautions(警告与注意事项)”“Dosage and Directions(剂量与用法)”以及“Other Information(其他信息)”等典型板块,

根据第二段第二句“The tarantulas were particularly useful whenever she didn't want her mom tocomeintoher

25. A。 定位至第三段末尾“She believes her dyslexia helps with TV presenting today…(她认为她的阅读障碍症对她如

第四段提到“‘I just fell in love with sharks’…McCubbin thinks that people misjudge them.(‘爱上了鲨鱼’……

文章结尾段首句直接点明“An important part of McCubbin's job is raising awareness aboutwildlifeandthee

根据第二段中的“Instead, he fought for the filmmakers to stop showing the scientists as data-calculatingstere

otypes(刻板印象).

Grody, a physician at UCLA… charges Grey's Anatomy with misleading them on a medical condition.”

tersthatmayrepresentbrilliantdoctorsorscientificgeniuses,butalsohavehumanquirksthatallowview

anquirks”。

64percent.Incontrast,whiletypicalrecognizersimprovedto51percent,theyremainedatthelevelofac

e…’…”Combininginnatetalentwithprofessionaltrainingmaybeourbestdefence…”

D选项中的“internalperspective(内在视角)”是本段主题“growthmindset”的隐蔽替换词。“gui

dethroughhardship(在艰辛中提供指引)”呼应了面对挑战时的正确态度。

E选项描述了高AQ人群“drawlessons(汲取教训)”的具体行为,完

A.tired(疲惫的)、C.lazy(懒惰的)和D.anxious(焦虑的)均无法体现其因自尊而拒绝求助的心理。

42.A。 B.evaluating(评估价值)和C.re

viewing(复习,回顾)不贴合具体“算钱”的动作;D.predicting(预测)不符合当时情境。

43.B。 A.taking(拿走)不符合逻辑;C.throwing

A.worked(能用)与后文“移除

商品”矛盾;B.disappeared(消失)和C.broke(损坏)不符合此处银行卡被拒的常见表达。

45.A。 B.consta

ntly(不断地)、C.occasionally(偶尔地)和D.suddenly(突然地)均无法体现这个渐进达成目标的过程。

46.B.wealthy与父亲“fixedincome(固定/微薄收入)”形成对比,暗示这位女士外表并不显“富裕”,但其后的慷慨行为

A.healthy(健康的)、C.friendly(友好的)和D.lonely(孤独的)均与上下文的经济状况对比无关。

A.turnedup(出现)、B.lookedaround(四处看看)和D.passedby(经过)均无法准确描绘此场景下的具体动作。

48.D. A.hesitated(犹

豫)、B.wondered(想知道)和C.bargained(讨价还价)均不符合其坚定的善意。

49.B. A.sharply(尖锐地)、C.narrow

ly(狭窄地)和D.fixedly(盯着看,略显僵硬)均不合适。

ovide”。B.brave(勇敢的)、C.calm(冷静的)和D.restless(焦躁不安的)均无法准确表达这种无力感带来的“自尊受

51.B.able意为“有能力的”,女士让父亲“whenyouareable(当你有能力时)”再去帮助别人,这是一个现实且温暖的

A.lucky(幸运的)、C.generous(慷慨的)和D.stable(稳定的)均不如“able”能直接

A.promised(承诺)和C.decided(决定)与文意相反。B.failed(未

53.B.gaveway意为“屈服,让步”,与“heldground(坚守立场)”相对。

A.tookcredit(邀功)、C.heldground(坚守)和D.tookflight(逃跑,逃

B.tradin

g(交易)、C.checking(检查)、D.saving(节省)均不能准确描述这个具体动作。

A.cashier(收银员)角色错误;B.witness(证人)不符;D.hero(英雄)过于具体或夸张,不如“per

56.remaining。

58.weretransported。

59.toboard。

60.and。

61.permitted。 此处修饰名词capacity(容量),需为定语。capacitypermit(允许)

62.Despite/Though。 空格后是“failingtosecuretickets(没能弄到票)”,后面是完整的主句。

63.grateful。

64.who/that。

65.departure。 ,depart

的名词为departure(离开/出发)。

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am Li Hua, the monitor of Class 1, and we are currently producing an English micro-movie for the upcomingA

rt Festival.

As for the film's concept, it revolves around the profound bond between a retiring teacher and his students.

Despite our efforts, however, we find it difficult to handle the vocal details during recording. To be more specific,

we struggle with word stress and the natural flow of the sentimental sentences. As a result, our articulation lacks the

subtle nuances required for such a moving story.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could help us polish our rhythm and intonation. We are looking forward to

your early reply.

Yours sincerely,

I opened the cage door and sat quietly beside her. I didn't reach out, but simply leaned against the wall, humming

a soft tune from my childhood against the sound of the rain lashing the windows. I expected to wait a long time, yet t

o my great surprise, I soon felt a faint, warm pressure against my knee. Luna had crept out from the shadows, her em

erald eyes fixed on mine. With a trembling heart, I tentatively stroked her soft fur. She didn't run; instead, she let out

a tiny, shaky purr. In that small, shared space, I realized I had finally gained her trust, and the cold knot of loneliness

in my chest began to dissolve.

Luna's progress soon began to change me as well. Watching her transform from a terrified stray into a confident

companion gave me a new perspective. If Luna could adapt to her new environment, I realized I could do the same.In

spired by her bravery, I began to step out of my shell, joining other volunteers for lunch and sharing stories about my

culture. My once- quiet apartment was no longer a cage, but a home filled with warmth. I finally understood that a se

nse of belonging isn't something you find on a map; it's something you build through connection, one small step at a t

ime.

Luna

M: We have no choice. I'm afraid we can't afford to take a taxi.

W: What kind of training did you have for your job?

M: Well, I was in college for four years, followed by six years in medical school. It's a common phenomenon in this field to r

W: It sounds tough to be in school until your late twenties or early thirties. What is your daily routine?

M: Well, most of the day, I'm in my office dealing with the usual sorts of illnesses, children's colds, the flu, children's check-u

ps for school, that sort of thing.

W, I assume you also have rounds to make at the hospital.

M: Oh, yes. I make my rounds at Mercy Hospital first thing in the morning. That's where my patients go if they have something

serious. And sometimes, I return in the afternoon if one of my patients has had an operation in the morning.

W: And do you perform operations yourself?

M: No, that's a surgeon's job. But I must be there to check on the children's progress, cheer them up, talk to their parents... things

 like that.

have rounds to make (医生)需要查房、巡房

W: It seems quite common actually. A lot of people in Australia now are taking trips and enjoying their leisure time. And when

I was traveling in foreign countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, I met so many people doing the same thing.

M: Right. Speaking of Singapore, some people say it's very modern, but it's rather boring. Is that true?

W: It's difficult to say it's really like that. It has a variety of attractions. Some are modern, while others are traditional. It's clean.

It has fantastic shopping centers, and I really love that part of Singapore.

M: After Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, where did you go?

W: I went to China.

M: Well, it must be exciting

W: Definitely. Xizang is the most fascinating and exciting place. I' ve never been to such a different place. The people there ar

e wonderful. The clothes they wear and the food they eat are just attractive to me.

M: Hmm, how do you feel after all this traveling?

W: Getting away from home and stepping outside of your usual routine is beneficial to both mind and body. Being exposed to

new cultures and people will greatly shift your way of thinking and create a healthier outlook once you return home.Seeing d

ifferent social classes creates a strong feeling of sympathy and makes you feel more blessed and content.

M: Yeah. Maybe it's something I should try.

W: Plant variety is important to feed the increasing population of our planet. Beyond mere nutrition, it serves as a safegua

rd against possible crop diseases and future food security crises. Varied plant species ensure that if one crop fails due to disease or

environmental stress, others can fill the gap.

However, experts warn of a sharp decline in plant variety over the past century. Shockingly, up to 100,000 plant species now

face the threat of extinction. As these species disappear suddenly, so do the unique genetic codes that define their traits—— tr

aits that could hold the key to developing climate-resistant crops or curing plant diseases in the future.

Many experts blame climate change and loss of normal growth areas for damaging plant life. They say human activities an

d poorly planned, overly heavy use of land are responsible. Modern commercial farming methods saved millions of people from s

tarvation, but another result was that some traditional crops were lost.

Even as we face this challenge. hope survives. A US-based non-profit organization has dedicated itself. to preserving and

distributing high-quality seeds. By collecting rare and heirloom seeds from around the world, the organization aims to safeguard g

enetic diversity, ensuring that future generations have access to the plant varieties needed to adapt to a changing planet. It strives t

o balance agricultural progress with the preservation of nature's botanical legacy. heirloom传家宝级种子;传统珍稀品种
