The paddle (桨) cuts through the water as Paralympian athlete Curtis McGrath pushes his canoe (皮划艇) forward. With each strong move, a quick flash of green-and-yellow Aboriginal art can be seen on the paddle — the special design for Australia’s Paralympic team. For McGrath, this pattern, called “The Journey”, carries deep meaning. It matches his own story, as he found strength in sports after losing his legs. It seems symbolic of the idea that talking can support recovering.
Many people find it difficult to talk about serious illness or injury. Serious injuries, like McGrath’s, come with a complex range of emotions including anger, denial, and depression. But sharing such emotions and talking about injuries can help people to manage them.
“For me, to have a good support network around me helped me get through those tough times,” McGrath said during an interview in 2018. Understandably, many people with serious injuries find it easier to talk with others going through the same or a similar experience. This can bring a fuller level of understanding that helps people live with their injury on practical and emotional levels.
“Six months after I got hurt, I got to see people who’d been injured doing things that I didn’t think were possible,” says McGrath. Inspired, he tried a few sports before finding his passion for paracanoe that he took to the Invictus Games in London, 2014. His achievements in sports have seen him win multiple gold medals at the Paralympic Games and World Championships.
McGrath has become a champion for people with a disability, and a motivational speaker. And he’s not afraid to openly discuss his suffering. “It’s important to remember that the hard times never last forever,” advises McGrath, “There’s someone out there that’s going through something similar. It’s your responsibility to reach out to talk and to see what you could be.”
24. Why does the author mention “The Journey” on McGrath’s paddle?
A. To present his personal recovery story.B. To express his honor as a disabled athlete.
C. To explain the special design for the team.D. To highlight the importance of team spirit.
25. How can sharing emotions about serious injuries benefit people?
A. It reduces their dependence on others.B. It saves them the cost of medical care.
C. It increases their tolerance of injuries.D. It helps them get professional guidance.
26. What does McGrath advise disabled people to do?
A. Contain emotions.B. Take responsibility.C. Develop hobbies.D. Seek connection.
27. Which of the following can best describe McGrath?
A. Curious and devoted.B. Strict and influential.C. Strong and independent.D. Open-hearted and inspiring.

In an oasis of green space sandwiched among Manhattan skyscrapers, one oddball stood out among the parkgoers Monday morning. It was a robot mower (割草机) named “Belawncé”. Looking like an oversize Roomba with heavy-duty wheels, it pilots itself with the help of an artificial intelligence camera system that resembles a pair of human eyes. After two to four hours of mowing, the robot navigates to a charging station.
For the past few months, the electric robot mower has taken over grass-clipping duties on the main lawn of Bryant Park, a small but heavily used public park. Toshi Yano, director of the park, said in an interview that the robot mower has proved effective, safe and more environmentally friendly than gas-powered, human-operated mowers.
Belawncé is a glimpse at the promise and the problems of using robots for tasks such as yard work. Bryant Park previously tried a couple of other robot mowers that were finicky. The prior robots would get stuck in certain parts of the park. To connect to satellites for navigation, at times the park needed one receiver on-site and another on a nearby office tower. Starting this spring, Bryant Park picked a model made by a company called Sunseeker. It has required less human intervention over time.
Unlike its pop star namesake, Belawncé and its fellow robot mowers aren’t beloved by all. Nanci Fioravanti, landscape manager for Green-Wood, a popular green space in Brooklyn that uses two robot mowers, has had to reassure staff worried about job losses from automation. Fioravanti also said that the robot mowers aren’t suited to steep areas of Green-Wood or where tree cover makes them lose signal.
Park officials made sure Belawncé navigated around or stopped for humans and wildlife. “Either the birds or the AI or some combination of both are doing what they’re supposed to do and avoiding one another,” Yano said.
28. What is a key feature of Belawncé?
A. It is gas-powered.B. It looks human-like.C. It is uniquely shaped.D. It operates autonomously.
29. What does the underlined word “finicky” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Inefficient.B. Demanding.C.Independent.D.Conventional.
30. What aspect concerning robot mowers was mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. Theirrestrictions.B. Their adaptability.C. Their environmental value.D. Their maintenance costs.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the use of robot mowers.B. To question the value of robot mowers.
C. To report on the adoption of a robot mower.D. Toshow the great progress of a robot mower.

While coral reefs cover only a tiny fraction of the ocean floor, they are home to millions of plants and animals, representing tens of thousands of species.
Researchers estimate that nearly 60 percent of the world’s coral reefs are seriously threatened. Corals depend on clean, clear, relatively shallow waters to survive. When stressed, they can lose their co-existing zooxanthelle (虫黄藻) — a process called “bleaching”, which means the coral’s color is removed. Without its food source, the coral often dies. Along polluted coastlines or on reefs where plant-eating fish have been severely reduced by fishing, the coral reefs are quickly overrun with seaweed.
The climate events of 1997 — 1998, such as flooding, mudslides and destructive storms, struck a major blow to the world’s coral. “Global ocean and land temperatures averaged about four degrees Fahrenheit above normal, and sea level rose at least one inch above average,” said Dr. William Patzert, JPL oceanographer. “We saw areas where for tens or hundreds of kilometers, there was 90 percent death. Total global coral death rate may have been as high as 20 percent.”
This became the best-documented global coral bleaching event in history. “For the first time,” said Patzert,“scientists were watching all the tropical oceans and seas from space, while an army of researchers and citizen scuba divers recorded the underwater devastation — the locations and intensity of coral bleaching. These data will provide an advance in our understanding of coral reefs.”
Using satellite data on sea-surface temperatures, scientists are developing maps of “hot spots”, places where unusually warm sea-surface temperatures may be stressing corals. These may provide an early warning of coral reefs in distress and, possibly, another worldwide coral bleaching event. Remote sensing from satellites and aircraft is providing new ways to survey and monitor coral reefs. “We know that climate events and the heat changes around the tropics have huge impacts on corals,” said Patzert. “While we can’t change these natural events, the more we know about them and how they affect corals, the more we can do to help coral reefs survive.”
32. What can we learn about the coral reefs?
A. They contribute to underwater diversity.B. They recover quickly after being bleached.
C. They cover a large area of the ocean floor.D. They are threatened only by human activities.
33. What is the root cause of coral bleaching between 1997 and 1998?
A. The loss of zooxanthelle.B.The rise of the sea level.
C. The overgrowth of seaweed.D.The outbreak of climate events.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward using satellite data in the research?
A. Critical.B.Indifferent.C.Supportive.D.Negative.
35. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Coral Reefs: Home to Marine BiodiversityB. Coral Bleaching: Causes and Monitoring Efforts
C. Satellite Technology: A Solution to coral DeclineD. Coral Reefs: Climate Threats and Protective Measures

How Not to Fall into Despair
Finding meaning and keeping hope through pain and loss is a vital skill. In 1949, the Holocaust survivor, psychiatrist and psychologist Viktor Frankl coined the term “tragic optimism” to describe this puzzle.
____36____The first is pain—we have physical bodies. The second is guilt—we make choices and feel responsible for outcomes. The third is loss—nothing we love lasts forever.
Tragic optimism means accepting that life will be hard, yet choosing to move forward positively. It understands we cannot force constant happiness. ____37____We can feel joy and sorrow, hope and fear—sometimes all in one day.
Hard times often push people to extremes: False positivity or deep despair. ____38____Between them lies a better way: wise hope and action. This means seeing reality clearly, then focusing our energy on what we can change.
Believing we have control builds hope; hope reminds us we have control. ____39____We need this balance now more than ever. Frankl believed our deepest pains can become sources of meaning. Suffering can lead to growth; guilt can motivate change. Those who find meaning in hardship survive not just in body, but in spirit. ____40____It is what makes suffering bearable.
A. It allows us to feel all emotions.
B. Both stop us from taking useful action.
C. It Falsely requires only positive thinking.
D. Extreme emotions are not necessarily bad.
E. Meaning is more than just surviving difficulty.
F. This mindset is key to personal and community strength.
G. Tragic optimism is based on three common human struggles.

In Benton School, the chatter of students filled Room 13 every day. Among the lively atmosphere, Wanda Petronski, a poor Polish girl, with her unruly hair and a faded blue dress that showed signs of frequent wear, became the target of cruel jokes among her classmates.
Each morning, as Wanda stepped into the classroom, a sudden silence would fall over the room. The abrupt silence was soon replaced by whispers and laughter. “Look, there’s Wanda,” Peggy would whisper to her friend Maggie, her eyes shining with mischief. Peggy, the most popular girl in class, was well-known for her sharp tongue and a good sense of fashion. Driven by a mix of boredom and meanness (恶意), she would call out, “How many dresses do you have now, Wanda?” Her voice was filled with pretended curiosity.
Wanda would hesitate, her fingers nervously twisting her dress. “A hundred,” she would reply in a soft murmur; her voice was barely heard. Instantly, the classroom would erupt in laughter. “A hundred!” Peggy would shout, her laughter echoing through the room. “I bet they’re all made of paper!” The other students would join in, their cruel laughter filling the air. Wanda’s face would redden with awkward, and she would quickly lower her head, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
Miss Mason, their teacher, often tried to intervene. “That’s enough, class. Let’s start the lesson,” she would say firmly, attempting to restore order. But the damage had been done. Day after day, Peggy and her group of friends continued to make fun of Wanda, asking about her “hundred dresses” and making ill remarks about her plain clothes.
One day, Miss Mason announced an exciting drawing contest. The theme was “Design a Dress,” and the winning entries would be displayed in the school hall. Peggy, confident in her artistic abilities, was determined to claim victory.

The Students’ Union
第二节(满分25分)
A few days later, Miss Mason announced the result and everyone was shocked. Wanda won the first prize, for she had submitted 100 exquisite, uniquely detailed fashion design drawings. Each drawing was a masterpiece, featuring elaborate patterns and vivid colors that far exceeded the simple sketches of the other students. Peggy and the class stared in disbelief at the beautiful display of Wanda’s talent. But Wanda wasn’t there to see her triumph. She had been absent for days, likely due to classmates’ constant bad behavior. The classroom was filled with an awkward silence as the students realized how wrong they had been to laugh at her.
Feeling a strong sense of guilt, Peggy and Maggie went to Wanda’s house with the good news. When they arrived, Wanda seemed surprised to see them. Peggy, her voice filled with regret, said, “Wanda, your drawings won! They’re amazing. We’re so sorry for being mean.” Maggie nodded in agreement. Wanda smiled gently and said, “It’s okay.” She then offered to give Peggy and Maggie some of her drawings. “I want you to have them,” she said. Her kindness touched their hearts. From that day on, Peggy and Maggie learned the importance of kindness and never judged others by their appearance again. Whenever anyone walked through the school hall and saw Wanda’s beautiful drawings, they were reminded of the power of forgiveness and the impact that a single act of kindness could have.

W: Dave, do you know when China’s Shenzhou-20 manned spaceship successfully linked up with the space station combination?
M: Yes. It was launched on April 24th, 2025, which happened to be China’s 10th Space Day.

M: I’ll take these. Please put the steak and salad in separate boxes, and can I have a bag?
W: Plastic bags cost money, but paper bags are free.
M: Perfect, a paper bag please.
Text 3
M: Morning, Doctor Smith’s office. How may I help you?
W: I’d like to set up a time to see the doctor.
M: Would an appointment after 4 o’clock this afternoon work for you?
W: That sounds fine.
Text 4
M: My tennis partner can’t make it tonight — we can’t play or compete for the championship.
W: I’ll be your last-minute partner!
Text 5
W: Tom, have you picked a birthday gift for your wife?
M: Probably a new novel.
W: Only that? Why not a designer bag or something eye-catching?
M: She thinks a thoughtful gesture beats an expensive item.
Text 6
W: I don’t know why Jimmy hasn’t come back. Where can he be at this time of day?
M: It’s not too late. When is he supposed to be back home?
W: Two hours ago, but it’s 7 o’clock. I’m really worried about him.
M: Honey, don’t get so upset. I think he’s old enough to take care of himself. After all, it’s not too late.
Text 7
W: Richard, have you read the article about climate change ruining coastal farms with saltwater?
M: Yeah, but didn’t a Dutch farmer find a fix?
W: Exactly. He split his farm into salt-level zones, growing carrots, cabbages, onions and potatoes with a mix of sea and fresh water. Potatoes did best — all were smaller but tastier, richer in sugar and salt.
M: This could help salt-damaged countries.
W: Totally! Science and farming team up well against climate issues.
M: Yeah, more“salty vegetables”may hit stores soon.
Text 8
W: David, did you see the London Jellycat pop-up video? People queued for hours for the stuffed toys!
M: Yeah, I can’t believe they cost $25 each, but they’re really cute. The social media tag hit nearly 8 billion views — so popular!
W: Right! My 18-year-old sister has been stressed out with exams recently. Her Labubu dolls comfort her when she holds them while studying or lying in bed.
M: Articles say teens and adults drive demand — over a quarter of sales. They are like a little source of happiness and comfort.
W: I want one! Wanna check Baby Beans online? Their stuffed toys are soft and high-quality.
M: Sure! Let’s find unique ones for our collections.
Text 9
M: Hey, Cindy! I heard you joined the Parkrun activity in the community last Saturday. How was it?
W: It was amazing! I never thought running could be so much fun with a big group. There were families with kids, elderly joggers, even people walking their dogs.
M: Sounds fun! But isn’t it just like a regular morning run?
W: Not at all. Parkrun is free and open to everyone. Volunteers time the runners, and you can track progress online. The community atmosphere is unbeatable — we cheered for each other at the finish line, like a mini-festival!
M: Wait, do I need to be super fit? I’m more of a couch potato...
W: Of course not. It’s not a competition. Some walk, some jog, some run fast. I saw a 70-year-old lady finish right before me. Wanna try next week?
M: OK. What should I wear?
W: Comfortable sportswear and sneakers. Register online for a barcode — volunteers scan it to record time. Trust me, crossing that finish line with everyone clapping is addictive.
Text 10
M: Australian researchers are using SwagBot — a red, four-wheeled AI robot — to boost cattle farming. It drives automatically, moving cattle between fields according to soil and plant conditions to improve efficiency and cut environmental impact.
Created by Professor Salah Sukkarieh’s team at the University of Sydney, SwagBot launched in 2016, initially only moved around cattle-feeding fields. Upgraded systems now let it assess grass health, type and density, and monitor cattle health, guiding cattle to suitable areas to protect grass and soil while sending data to farmers.
Still in development, SwagBot is part of agricultural robotics trend. Experts hope such robots will raise productivity and ease labor shortages, a key issue in Australia.
